I Am Abel Foundation would like to formally invite medical students, physicians, faculty and leaders/administrators at Chicago area medical academic centers to nominate deserving medical students for this year's coveted Still Standing Awardee.  Each year, I Am Abel Foundation recognizes medical students who have overcome significant obstacles as they pursue their dream of becoming a physician. It is an award that celebrates leadership, humanitarianism and resilience amongst our underrepresented medical students.

Last year, we celebrated now M2, Orrianne Morrison, a nontraditional student at Rush Medical College who had to overcome the challenges of homelessness, affording college, and believing she could realize her ambitious dream of becoming a physician.

The Theme For Our Signature Event Preparing Our Successors In Medicine 5th Annual Gala is:

20/20   Write The Vision And Make It Plain

A Dream Deferred But Not Denied - Perfect Vision For An Appointed Time

CELEBRATION AND SERVICE

(How It All Works)

The recipient will give a 10-12 minute keynote address to our community partners, physicians, mentees and guests at our annual Preparing Our Successors In Medicine 5th Annual gala, Spring/Summer 2020.

The Still Standing Awardee must also commit to undertake a project that supports the mission of I Am Abel Foundation to raise our next generation of healthcare heroes. There will be a line item budget to support this important advocacy project and students may choose from numerous existing outreach projects already in existence or, upon approval, create a project of their own.

The awardee will also be gifted with a travel award and may choose from among several sponsored travel experiences that support the students continued growth and development in the realm of medical education, leadership and humanitarian service.  Several options include scholarship support for travel to Haiti, Cuba or Costa Rica or other initiatives sponsored by I Am Abel Foundation.  Other travel options options for all expenses paid (registration, accommodations, air travel) to the upcoming National Medical Association (NMA) Conference in Atlanta, August 1st - 5th, 2020 or SNMA National Conference, March 31st - April 4th, 2021.

Nominations will be accepted from November 1st, 2019 through February 2nd, 2020. The awardee will be notified by March 15, 2020.  To receive the award, the winner MUST be present and available to present at the annual gala.  Please forward the link below to faculty, staff, advisors or even students you believe might know of minority students who are deserving of this award.
