Allergy Policy
Please be advised that the I Am Abel Foundation has a limited capacity to accommodate food allergies, with efforts primarily focused on avoiding nuts. Due to the diverse range of allergies, dietary requirements, and preferences among students, it is logistically impossible to accommodate all individual needs within a shared environment.
We are unable to eliminate other common allergens such as fruit, avocado, red onion, garlic, dairy, nuts, shellfish and any other allergen from any provided meals, and no meal substitutions will be offered. All meals are served in shared environments where cross-contact with allergens is unavoidable, and we cannot guarantee allergen-free conditions. This policy extends to our partner hospitals that provide clinical learning opportunities for our students. Please note that for offsite events or programs, no allergy accommodations can be made, and each facility operates under its own policies and directives.
Students who cannot be in the vicinity of certain foods or require allergen-free meals are required to bring their own lunch. For students whose allergies are so severe that exposure to known allergens in the same room or environment could evoke a significant or life-threatening reaction, please be aware that our program is unable to accommodate such students.
Furthermore, any student with moderate to severe or life-threatening allergies must carry an Epi-pen and/or appropriate rescue medications with them at all times and must be fully trained in their proper use. High school students with allergies are required to have a parent or guardian present on-site at all times who is also proficient in the administration of Epi-pens and rescue medications.
The I Am Abel Foundation explicitly states that it will not be held responsible for allergic reactions of any kind and will not modify its meal plans or food service to meet individual dietary needs. By allowing a child to participate in our programming, parents/guardians acknowledge and accept these terms.
Individuals who have indicated an allergy will receive a consent form for signature.
If you have not yet stated an allergy but have one, please contact Noah at noahpetashi@iamabel.org to receive the necessary consent form.
