LORETTO Community Grand Rounds

Updated: Aug 25, 2020

Loretto Community Grand Rounds on Saturday, May 11th, 2019 was a great success. Austin Community lay people filled the auditorium at The Loretto Hospital and enjoyed a day filled with health information pertinent to this population. The event was a wonderful collaboration between Northwestern Hospital, The Loretto Hospital and I AM ABEL FOUNDATION. The vision for the day was thanks to Ike Okuwosa, Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiologist at Northwestern University. He is also a beloved Physician Mentor at I AM ABEL FOUNDATION and leader of the Heart Smart Physical Diagnoses Curriculum.

Dr. Ike, as we call him, has a heart for the people and wanted to put together preventive screenings and a series of health talks for the people of the community. Northwestern University Medical Students, Residents and Fellows were on hand in huge numbers to support. Also present were mentees from I AM ABEL FOUNDATION and countless medical students from the Comprehensive Clerkship Group that are rounding at The Loretto Hospital on various rotations. Physician Mentor, Ed McDonald, MD, was also on hand. Dr. McDonald, a Chef and Gastroenterologist at the University of Chicago, spoke on nutrition, food deserts and ways to use diet as medicine. Speaking on Diabetes and nutrition was also Certified Diabetes Nurse Clinician Nancy Rodriguez, RN, BSN, CDEC whose work in the Austin Community has been incredibly impactful and results driven.

We would like to thank George Miller, CEO, The Loretto Hospital and his amazing and qualified staff for hosting this wonderful event. We look forwards to decreasing disparities and increasing equity in Austin and all of Chicago - Together!
